Purpose of AskPSU

This service enables Web support staff in Penn State colleges, departments, and organizations to create and customize one or more Web forms that will direct inquiries to the appropriate contacts within your organization.

The Web form is displayed in the style of an electronic postcard. The information that appears on the postcard is entered and saved in the AskPSU database.

Application and Use

A Penn State Access Account is required to apply for this service. No knowledge of HTML, FTP, or scripting languages is required. You can edit your form at any time through the Administrator Login page. A link to your customized form can be added to your Web site once the form has been created and customized for your area.

For step-by-step instructions on editing your form, please see the AskPSU tutorial.

For an example of an AskPSU form and how it can be used, please see the Sample Form.

Form Fields and Functions

  • Form Type: This option allows you to choose between the simple 1-page format of the form with a drop down list of topics or the more detailed 2-page format.

  • Page Title: This text follows the word "Ask" at the top of your form. For example, Ask Consulting & Support Services.

  • Postcard Text: This is optional introductory information that will appear under the page title.

  • Additional Information: This is optional text that will be displayed on a Web page after the visitor submits the form.

  • Order: The numbers entered in this field will determine the order in which topics are displayed in the topic menu of your post card. As you enter topics, they are assigned a number in multiples of ten, but you can change the order by entering any number, selecting the Alphabetize Topics button or selecting the Renumber button located below the form.

  • Topic name: This can be any word or phrase you think visitors might be looking for on your Web site.

  • Topic e-mail: This should be the e-mail address of the person(s) who can best answer questions related to the topic listed on the same line.

  • Important Note:

    • Remember, all e-mail addresses and the associated topics used should have the approval of the
      owner(s).

  • Hide: If you do not want the visitor to see the e-mail address used for the selected topic, check this box.

  • Note:

    • If you do not select the checkbox to hide the email address, when a question is submitted, the follow-up message will display the address, suggesting that further questions may be directed to that email address.

  • Your e-mail has been sent to: Enter contact information here. We recommend that you use an organization or group name rather than an individual's name.
