Cellular Overview

Cellular technology uses FM radio waves to transmit conversations rather than conventional telephone lines. As you move about with your cellular phone, your call is transferred via a computerized switch between operating areas known as cells. Each cell has its own transmission tower linked to a Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO), which connects your call to the public switched telephone network. MTSOs are owned and operated by one of the wireless carriers in your area. The University currently has comprehensive contracts with AT&T, Nextel and Verizon Wireless. There is no exclusive arrangement with any one cellular carrier, and service contracts with additional carriers may be added over time. The service provider selected in any particular case should be based on the service requirements of the user.
