Backbone Connections

Modem users should know about the backbone connection, a faster, more convenient connection method that may be available to you if you live in a residence hall or work on campus. A backbone connection is vastly superior to a modem connection: it's up to 100 times faster than the fastest modem you can buy, and it won't tie up your phone line.

This high-speed connection to the Penn State network and Internet may also be referred to as a network, Ethernet, FastEthernet, or ATM connection.

Generally, backbone connections are used on campus, while modems are used off-campus. If you are living in a residence hall, apply for an backbone connection; see Residence Hall Connections for information. If you are using a modem in your office, check with your local computer support person to see if a backbone connection is available.
