Internet Services Summary

The following services and resources are available to Penn State students, faculty, and staff. Follow the links for further information and details.

Electronic Mail (e-mail)

Email is information that is sent electronically from one computer user to another, is a fast, convenient way to handle correspondence. Eudora, an easy-to-use e-mail package, is available free of charge to Penn State students, faculty, and staff.

eLion

Formerly called "Comprehensive Academic Advising Information System (CAAIS)," eLion provides access to academic records and interactive advising services. Students must have a current Penn State Access Account.

Dial-up Modem Access

Off-campus connections to the Penn State network and Internet can be accomplished through a modem and phone line.

Directory Services

The phonebook software "LDAP" lets you look up the phone number, address, department, email address, and other information for individuals at Penn State. Other services such as Switchboard provide listings for other locations.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a method for transferring files between computers connected to the Internet. People use FTP to download software, documents, pictures, and other files from various sites. The administrators of the server you plan to use can provide instructions for accessing your server space. Library Information Access System (LIAS)

University Libraries resources can be accessed at ITS student computing labs or on your computer through the World Wide Web. The on-line catalog (LIAS) and many Internet resources and databases are available, including electronic books and texts, maps, periodicals, special collections, and much more.

Telnet

Telnet is software that enables your computer to login (sign on) another computer.

Usenet News

Netnews (or Usenet) is an interactive electronic bulletin board that displays thousands of "news groups" focusing on a wide variety of topics. You can read articles, post your own, and reply publicly or privately. In many news groups, instructions for procedures and lists of frequently asked questions are periodically posted for new users. World Wide Web

The World Wide Web is an easy-to-use interface to the Internet. On the Web you can find a wealth of information on almost any topic you can imagine, and you can access not only text, but graphics, sound and video. You can also publish your own Web pages.
