Alert: Email Messages Asking for Personal Account Information

Posted on Thursday, August 12, 2004

It has come to our attention that email messages are circulating that are requesting users to supply personal account information. The message purports to come from what appears to be a legitimate financial institution and invites the user to click a link and renew their account information. These messages are considered to be "phishing" scam. This is not a legitimate message - please do not follow the instructions in the message. We remind our users that they should not supply any personal information based on an email request of this type.

Unsolicited scam email complaints should be sent to spam@psu.edu with full headers. Members of the security team will contact the offending ISP and report the email to the Federal Trade Commission.

If you are in doubt about a message you receive, please contact Security Operations and Services (SOS) at 814-863-9533.
