Web Q&A

1. How do I put my home page on the Web?

Find instructions at the following URL: http://www.psu.edu/publish/

2. Why do I see a list of files instead of my page?

You must name your home page file index.html (or index.htm or index.shtml). See instructions at the following URL:

http://www.personal.psu.edu/faq/

3. How do I put a counter on my Web page?

Instructions for adding counters can be found at the following URL:

http://www.personal.psu.edu/faq/

4. Can you send me Joe Doe's e-mail address?

You can search for Penn State individuals at http://www.psu.edu/ph/ on the Web.

5. I can't access my Web page anymore. Why?

It could be because you deleted your "www" directory and then recreated it. To fix the problem, use the AFS User Utility function available at the following URL:

http://www.personal.psu.edu/afs-util.html

Select the "Reset ACLs" function to fix the problem.

6. Why don't my pictures show up on my page?

Your graphic files must be saved in the correct format, and must be transferred to your Web space as raw data. See the instructions at the following URL:

http://www.personal.psu.edu/faq/

7. My information is wrong in the on-line phone directory. Can you change it?

No, you are responsible for changing your information. See http://cac.psu.edu/internet/directory.html for instructions.

8. I can't find the So-and-So Society on the Web. Where is it?

We could not find the So-and-So Society either. Perhaps they do not have a Web page or if they do, it is located on a server that is not searched by the Penn State search engine. Check with the Office of Student Affairs to see if the club is registered as an official organization. Then contact the club officers and ask if they have a Web page.

9. I uploaded my new Web files to the server. Why are the old pages still there?

Choose your browser's Reload function, and you should be able to access the new files.

10. Can you change my URL?

We cannot change personal URLs, but Colleges and Departments can specify the last portion of their URL. See http://cac.psu.edu/news/current/webnews.html for information.
