Upgrade Slated for Penn State Search Engine–July 11, 2006

Academic Services and Emerging Technologies (ASET), a unit of Information Technology Services (ITS), will upgrade the Penn State Search Engine on July 11, 2006 to a newer version of Google Search Appliance.

Penn State's Search Engine http://search.psu.edu/ is version 3.4.14 of Google Search Appliance, model GB-5005. The license for this version will expire on September 1, 2006. ASET plans to replace this appliance with the newer version, 4.4.94 of model GB-5005. During the pre-scheduled maintenance window from 5:00 - 7:00 a.m. on July 11, only those searches invoking the Penn State Search Engine will be disrupted for a short period in order to install the upgraded model.

Additionally, University Web pages utilizing certain special features of this search engine in their search forms (e.g sub-collections & XSLT custom search results style) will require additional changes to be implemented. Those pages invoking forms with these features will no longer work properly unless they are prepared to use the new search engine prior to July 11; thus, webmasters of these pages should refer to the Penn State Search Engine documentation, or to future ASET presentations for more information on how to implement changes prior to July 11.

More information regarding the upgrade, including features that may require changes to some Web sites invoking the search engine, is available via http://aset.its.psu.edu/googledocs/2006_upgrade/.

Other questions regarding the upgrade should be sent to search@psu.edu.
