Finding a Web Server

A computer where files are stored for Internet access is referred to as a server. A server can be the same computer where the files are created. However, in most cases, a separate computer functions as the Web server. In the departments and colleges, a computer support person, system administrator, or editor may serve as "Webmaster." How this is handled depends on the resources and staffing of each department or college. The following options may be available:
  • Your departmental systems and resources. Talk to your local computer support staff. If you can find your department or college on the Web, you will most likely find a contact person's name on that page. If not, your college or department administrative office should be able to assist.

  • The Information Technology Services Web Server. Web space is now available for all Penn State students, faculty, staff, and official departments and organizations. For more information, see ITS Web Services.

  • A commercial Web presence provider. Many companies have been created solely for the purpose of offering server space for Web pages or for creating and publishing Web pages. Here are businesses found through Yahoo in Pennsylvania using the Search criteria Regional-US States-Pennsylvania-Business and Economy-Business to Business-Communications and Networking-Internet and World Wide Web-Network Service Providers-Internet Service Providers(ISPs).

No matter what option you choose, we welcome you to attend seminars offered by the ITS.

Please note that ITS tests systems every day between 5:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. During that time, one or more services may not be available.
