FAQ

What is the purpose?

  • Enable end users to find information quickly and easily.
  • Provide a tool to create and maintain a site index.
  • Consolidate site-wide information.
  • Provide more control over user search results.
  • Increase efficiency and functionality of the current site.
  • Provide another useful service to the Penn State community.

What information will go into the database?

  • Topics: names of services and technologies
  • Keywords: synonyms for topics
  • URL
  • Description
  • Notes: field for staff notes, not displayed to end user (this field to be added later)

Who will maintain the database?

Unit web support staff designated by the senior directors will be given access to edit the database. They will then add pointers on their web sites as needed. An example of a site index can be found at https://siteindex.psu.edu/its.html . The information in this site index is based on information originally provided by representatives from all ITS units, with updates from the reorganization, and additions of recent services based on review of unit web sites.

I want to see only the information for my unit. Will this be possible?

Yes. A field will be available to indicate your unit name and/or other administrative notes. For example, you could put "css" in the notes field, and then do a special search on "css" to produce a list of all the records you entered.

What if units already have site indexes and search mechanisms?

They can continue to use whatever works best for their environment and audience.
