Penn State Personal Web Page Templates

Update or Make changes to Your Web page

You can keep your Web page current by making changes to it using an ASCII (HTML code) editor or Visual editor (or you may decide to start over and re-enter your information into a blank form). We have provided instructions to edit templates using Netscape Composer, a visual editor component of Netscape. Most web borowsers include a web editing component. Three web Browsers are available from our PAC-ITS CD of from the PAC-ITS Web site: Netscape, Internet Explorer, and Mozzilla.

I. Open Your Web Page in Netscape Composer

1. Launch Netscape Communicator.

2. Click on the Communicator menu on the top menu bar.

3. Select Composer in the drop down menu.

Note: Composer may open a blank page automatically when launched.
4. Click on the Composer File menu:
Windows - Select Open Page. Click on the Choose File button. Locate and double click on your Web page file.

Macintosh - Select Open > Page in Composer. In the Open File dialog box locate and double click on your Web page file.

II. Edit your Web page with Composer

The Web page file you opened will not appear in Composer exactly as it does on the Web. Hyperlinks (indicated by blue underline text) will not function.

Editing Text

For the most part, you can work with text in Composer as you would in a word processing document. To change text on the page, select and type over it.

Page title

The page title is the text that appears in the top bar of your Web browser.
To change the page title on your Web page:
  1. Choose Format > Page Title (Macintosh) or Page Properties (Windows) from the drop down menu.

  2. In the Title text box replace the default text with the title you want to appear on your Web page.

Note: On this Web page, the page title is "Penn State Personal Web Page Templates: Making Changes"

Hyperlinks

As you probably know, a hyperlink is text, often indicated by a color or underline, that responds to a mouse click to take you from one page or location on a page to another.

When you view your Web page in a Web editor such as Composer, remember that each hyperlink has two parts: a. The text that is visible on the Web page; b. a Web address, not visable on the Web page, which tells the viewer's Web browser where to go next.

  1. To change the text of the hyperlink that appears on the Web page, select it and type over it with your changes.

  2. To change the location where the link will take the viewer when s/he clicks on it, select the hyperlink text and choose:

    Windows- Insert > Link
    Macintosh- Format > Link Info

  3. In the URL text box in the Insert (Windows) or Format (Macintosh) dialog box, insert the URL (Web address) of the to which site you want to link.

E-mail links

When a user clicks on an e-mail link, their browser is prompted to open a new pre-addressed e-mail message.

  1. To modify an e-mail link, select the text and replace it with your own.

  2. Select the new text and choose:

    Windows -Insert > Link
    Macintosh- Format > Link Info

  3. In the URL text box in the Insert (Windows) or Format (Macintosh) dialog box replace any default text that follows "mailto:" followed by the desired e-mail address (for example, "mailto:xyz123@psu.edu")

Note: The text "mailto:" in the URL text box prompts the browser to open a mail application. Without that text, the link will not function.

Graphics

  1. To replace a graphic, click on the image to select it.

Note: If you don't want an image on your page, remove the graphic simply by selecting and deleting it .

  2. From the Composer main menu choose Format > Image Properties (Windows) or Image Info (Macintosh) in the drop down menu.

  3. In the Image Properties (Windows) or Format (Macintosh) dialog box, type the name of the graphic you want to appear in your page, or use the Choose File button to select the file on your machine.

  4. Use the Format dialog box to control other elements related to the graphic, such as size, border, etc.

Note: If you select a file from your machine using the Choose File button instead of typing the file name, delete the path text that precedes the file name.

Note: Your images must be saved either as JPEG or GIF files to display on the Web. For more information on using graphics in Web pages, visit http://www.personal.psu.edu/faq/cacweb.html#sec3

When you upload your Web page using an FTP client, remember that you must also transfer any graphics you have inserted in (linked to) your page to the same Web directory. If you don't transfer the image file to the same directory where your page is stored, a broken link icon will display on your Web page.

III. Preview your page in Navigator

To view your Composer file approximately as it will look on the Web:

  1. Save the changes to your Web page.

  2. In the Composer File menu choose Browse Page, or click on the Browse Page button (the ship's wheel icon) in the formatting toolbar.
